Rituals: embedding what matters most in everyday work

Apr 27, 2025

Culture is shaped in small, consistent moments, not by statements or slogans.

Rituals help teams hold onto what matters.
They create space for connection.
They anchor progress and keep focus steady when pressure builds.

In my work with leaders, the rituals that make the greatest difference are usually the simplest.
A gratitude round before a meeting.
A wins and learns reflection at the end of the week.
A short pause to mark the end of a quarter before the next race begins.

This month, choose one existing gathering and layer a simple ritual into it:

  • Start the next team meeting with one personal highlight from the week.

  • End the next leadership discussion by asking, "What decision have we made β€” and what will we do differently because of it?"

  • Pause before your next quarterly planning session to acknowledge the work that brought you here.

Rituals are not about adding more.
They are about making meaning visible.

If you are looking to create more clarity and capacity across your leadership this year, my Creating Capacity Masterclass in July offers practical ways to free up space and focus energy where it matters most.
(Details below if you would like to explore it.)

Where might a small, deliberate ritual help anchor what matters most in your leadership?

Culture grows in the small moments we choose to honour.

The Workplace Renaissance
I've been thinking about the disruption the Renaissance emerged from. In the early 1400s, Europe was reeling. A pandemic that had reshaped the labour market within living memory. Institutions splitting into competing factions. Economic structures collapsing. A new technology about to change who controlled knowledge. Sound familiar? The people in charge were frightened, and frightened people de...
What the Medici knew (a letter from Florence)
Β  Hello from Florence. Following a conference in Slovenia, I'm taking the opportunity to do one of the things I love most in one of the parts of the world I love most. Wandering. Wondering. Sitting in front of something five hundred years old and let my mind go quiet for an hour. I have to confess something. The Renaissance has had me in its grip since I was at school. I read The Prince as a t...
The Room Before the Stage (a note en route to Salzburg)
Β  I am writing this somewhere over the world, on my way to Europe. First stop Salzburg, then a conference week in Slovenia, then on to Italy and Croatia. Ahead of me is the thing I love most. Wandering and wondering. Sitting and soaking in front of something centuries old and letting my mind play. That, and sharing great conversations over amazing food in beautiful places. I always travel with...
