In my book, Shift: Everyday Actions Leaders Can Take to Shift Culture, I introduce the GRASS model—a practical, no-nonsense approach to shaping culture.
GRASS was born out of frustration with culture models that felt either too stuffy or too fluffy for leaders who just wanted clear direction on what to do. After synthesising decades of research, I narrowed down the moments that matter most to just eight.
The three most well-known are:
- First impressions—how we welcome and onboard.
- When things are going well—how we celebrate and acknowledge.
- When things aren’t going well—how we show up in tough times.
These are foundational moments I call the groundwork. They’re essential in every relationship, whether at work or beyond.
The GRASS model builds on this foundation, focusing on five key areas where leaders can create real cultural shifts:
- G - Gatherings: How and why people come together.
- R - Rituals: Shared behaviours that create connection and meaning.
- A - Actions: What you do, even when you think no one is watching.
- S - Symbols: Visible signs of what matters most.
- S - Stories: The narratives that define and reinforce your culture.
Get these right, and you’ll not only shift your culture—you’ll strengthen it in ways that endure.
Culture doesn’t need to be complicated. The GRASS model makes it simple and actionable for leaders ready to make a difference.
