China continues to hold a prominent position in Australia’s economic landscape. As of the latest Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) census data, it remains our largest trading partner. In 2024, China retains its status as the world’s second-largest economy in terms of nominal GDP and the largest in purchasing power parity. This data reaffirms the enduring significance of the “Asian Century” for Australians.
China’s commitment to international engagement was exemplified by the inaugural China International Import Expo held in Shanghai in November 2018. This event attracted participation from numerous countries, regions, international organizations, and enterprises, resulting in substantial trade agreements totaling $57.83 billion.
In terms of demographics, the latest ABS census data indicates a significant number of Chinese visitors, with 1.39 million recorded in the year ending February 2022. Additionally, the 2016 Census highlighted that over 1.2 million people of Chinese ancestry now call Australia home.
