Shared Language: A Powerful Unifier

Shared language is one of the most powerful tools in culture. It connects people, fosters belonging, and helps teams work more efficiently. Jargon, when used well, acts as a shorthand that simplifies communication and keeps things moving.

But shared language has a dark side.

When jargon proliferates unchecked, it can stifle everyday language, making communication convoluted and inaccessible. Worse, it can be used—intentionally or unintentionally—to exclude others, creating barriers to connection and understanding.

How healthy is your culture’s use of shared language?

Take a moment to reflect. Does your team’s jargon and shorthand bring people together, or does it contribute to exclusion? Are new team members and external partners able to understand and connect, or do they feel left out of conversations?

Shared language should unite, not divide. Leaders, it’s worth examining whether the words you use are creating connection or building barriers.
