A Weekend Away: Short Breaks, Big Returns

We just got back from a weekend in the stunning Sunshine Coast hinterland, and it feels like we’ve been away for a week. That sense of escape, rest, and recharge was exactly what we needed.

We’d booked the weekend two months in advance—something research suggests is a clever way to maximise happiness from a holiday. Anticipation plays a big role in the joy we experience, and planning ahead gives you something to look forward to.

While studies suggest that the ideal holiday length is eight days, other research shows you don’t need to wait for a long break to feel the benefits. Treating your weekend like a vacation—even if it’s a staycation—can significantly boost happiness and energy levels.

So, as you might imagine, we’ve already booked another weekend away for two months’ time.

Short breaks can be a powerful way to recharge, even in the midst of busy schedules. It’s a theme I often explore in my Recharge Masterclass and Recharge Retreats. Whether it’s a weekend in the hinterland or a few intentional hours unplugged, creating space to rest is essential for showing up as the leader, parent, or partner you want to be.
