Cultures are shaped by what you pay attention to

If I followed you around for a week—listening to your conversations, observing where you spent your time (and with whom), and noting what you emphasised versus what you ignored—what would I think was important to you?

Would I know what mattered most?

Your people notice what you pay attention to. As much as we’d like them to follow what we say, team members are constantly looking for clues about what truly matters. They observe your focus, actions, and priorities—not just your words.

What are you paying attention to? Are you intentionally focusing on what aligns with your culture and values, or could your actions be sending mixed signals?

Culture is shaped in the everyday moments, through the choices leaders make about where they invest their attention. What you emphasise signals safety, priorities, and what’s worth striving for.

Take a moment to reflect:

  • What did you spend your time on last week?
  • What messages did your actions and focus send to your team?
  • Is there something important that needs more of your attention this week?

Your attention is a powerful cultural signal. Use it wisely.
