Shifting to Capacity

November often marks peak overwhelm. End-of-year deadlines multiply, meetings become relentless, and demands intensify. For many leaders, the thought of summer is a lifeline - a chance to recharge and recover fully after sustained effort.

Yet rest doesn’t have to be something we simply collapse into once exhaustion takes hold. It can become a deliberate leadership strategy: a clear choice to renew and sustain capacity, rather than merely recover it after depletion.

Leaders who regularly integrate purposeful rest into their routines sustain steadier clarity and stronger resilience. Rest as a leadership practice is more than annual leave. It’s deliberate pauses, scheduled breaks between meetings, protected windows of reflection, and carefully chosen offline moments that renew energy throughout the year.

Right now, you have an opportunity. Rather than counting days until summer, consider how you’ll optimise your summer break to recharge deeply. Which boundaries will you set now, ensuring you genuinely step away? What small adjustments today could help you fully benefit from your planned rest?

One practical habit is to find 20 minutes without any input at least once or twice each week. No emails, no messages, no meetings, no podcasts, no phone calls or conversations - not even sleep counts. Just 20 minutes of genuinely unstructured space to reset your thinking. This small practice significantly shifts your capacity, sharpening clarity and improving your creativity and the quality of your decisions.

Over the longer term, embedding short, deliberate rest periods into your daily and weekly habits can sustain your leadership capacity. Even brief strategic pauses can shift how clearly you see opportunities, respond to challenges, and shape your team's culture.

How might deliberately planning your upcoming summer break shift your leadership readiness for the year ahead?
How can you set up next year to be different?

The shifts we make today determine the capacity we hold tomorrow.

If embedding strategic rest resonates with you, join me for the Recharge Masterclass on 28 November. We’ll explore practical habits and strategic shifts to help you plan meaningful rest not just for your summer break but as a sustained leadership practice throughout the year.

Thanks for exploring with me,

Meredith

When Boring is Better
By October, leadership energy often drifts. Urgency rises. Important work risks being crowded out by the noise. Add to this mix, the frictions in our teams become frustrations and fractures as people's patience wears thin. Maybe you're feeling this yourself? It is tempting, especially now, to lean on bursts of effort - last-minute intensity, energy surges, or rapid campaigns of attention. Yet ...
Small Shifts, Big Capacity
Spring naturally invites us to clear away clutter. At home, it's straightforward - we sort, discard, and simplify our physical spaces. Yet leaders rarely apply the same practices to our own habits, routines, or practices. Leadership can easily accumulate cluttered thinking, overly complicated routines, or unnecessary actions, all quietly reducing our capacity to lead effectively. Small shifts ...
What is your culture up to?
Culture is always up to something. You may not have asked it to be, but it is. It shapes what people prioritise. It influences how decisions get made. It affects who speaks, who waits, and what happens next. Organisational culture is not a backdrop. It is a system. It moves through our language, pace, silence, reward, and resistance. It creates the conditions for progress or indeed, makes it h...
